PATIENT INFO - Pedodontics or Children dentistry
A dental visit is very often an unpleasant experience for a child. Not when the teeth are healthy and sound.
But when the dentist finds some cavities….
How to explain to a child the need for those sharp needles which hurts. Why their cheek, lip or tongue have to feel so strange. And the irritating noise of a high-speed drill. The awful vibrations going hand in hand with low speed drills.
Now, latest laser-technology can be the outcome.
Cleaning tooth cavities and removing decay can nowadays be achieved just by a powerful beam of light. In most cases, no anaesthesia is needed. So no need for injections.
No irritating noise nor vibrations. And children are familiar with lasers. They know them from television and movies. It is more easy to explain to a child what a laser will do than explaining the effect of a high-speed drill. And the laser will only remove the infected parts of the tooth and preserve the healthy one. An adhesive tooth colored filling can be applied afterwards.

So visiting a dentist will be no longer a child’s nightmare.

A relaxed young girl while drilling holes with a laser.

A happy patient after the treatment, willing to come back without any fear.

This is what is being done.
A big cavity in the first upper mo-lar left is drilled and cleaned with the laser. No anaesthesia had to be used. There was no pain or discom-fort.
And this is the result. A tooth
colored restoration makes it
almost impossible to detect the affected area. And the tooth is protected against future decay.

A very young child, only 2 years old. Almost every tooth is affected by decay. Without treatment, these teeth will cause pain. Local treatment with classical techniques is impossible. Only general anaesthesia in an hospital can be an outcome.
Treating them with a laser. Very Fast. Several teeth can be done in a few minutes.
No anaesthesia is needed. Laser energy provides stronger teeth afterwards.

An 8 year old young girl. Her first visit to a dentist. A very bad looking milk tooth. So let’s do something about it immediately.

That looks like a big cavity. No anaesthesia was used. Only while drying the tooth after caries removal with the laser, she had some cold sensation.

The tooth colored restoration. A happy child, no longer afraid of the dentist.
